This is a beautiful, handcrafted, and colorful statue of the "Thousand-armed Lokeshwor." According to tradition, Avalokiteshvara vowed to liberate all sentient beings from samsara—the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. He pledged not to rest until this task was accomplished.
Despite his tireless efforts, he realized that countless beings remained unhappy and were suffering. Overcome by the sorrow this caused him, his head shattered into eleven pieces. Amitabha Buddha came to his aid and bestowed upon him eleven heads, enabling him to hear the cries of all suffering beings.
When Avalokiteshvara subsequently attempted to reach and assist all suffering beings, his two arms shattered into pieces. Once again, Amitabha Buddha came to his aid and granted him a thousand arms, allowing him to reach out to and support all suffering beings.
